The Finnish payment service, Siirto, has been renewed. It now brings together the “pay a friend” feature, online payments and receiving bills in a single service. As a result, consumers can receive bills directly, in their own bank, without separate e invoicing agreements.
The new Siirto operates in OP Pohjola’s and Nordea’s banking apps. Payments and bills are processed by the user’s bank, with no need for a separate app. Siirto already has around one million registered users.
“We aim to build a common payment solution in Finland that is fast, secure and easy to use. The renewed Siirto brings together key services for daily payments via banking channels,” says Mikko Ketola, CEO of Siirto.
Three everyday payment methods in one service
The new version of Siirto brings together three key payment methods:
- Pay a friend: money can be transferred directly, in real-time from one bank to another (account to account) using just a phone number.
- Receiving bills: Siirto is introducing a new way to receive bills directly through online banking, without separate e invoicing agreements.
- Online payments: Siirto serves as a payment method in over 30,000 Finnish online stores; payments are performed directly in the banking app. Siirto combines familiar account payments with the ease of mobile payment. Siirto will be phased in for online payments on bank-specific schedules.
“From the customer’s perspective, ease of use is key: payments can be made and bills received with a familiar banking app, with no need for separate services or agreements. Siirto will enable this, making customers’ daily lives easier and streamlining everyday money management,” says Masa Peura, Senior Vice President of Everyday Banking at OP Pohjola.
Bills directly to the bank, no need for separate agreements
Using the renewed Siirto, billers can send bills directly to the consumer’s bank – the service retrieves up-to-date e invoicing address details and forwards the bill to the bank. From consumers’ viewpoint, bills will arrive through the familiar banking channel, just like e invoices, for easy and secure payment.
“Siirto is an example of how banks can collaborate to build a Finnish payment infrastructure that serves the whole of society. The aim is to create an open, widely used solution that enables the long-term development of payment features and makes life easier for billers and consumers,” says Sara Mella, Head of Personal Banking at Nordea.
Thanks to the partnerships already established, hundreds of thousands of Finns will be able to receive bills directly in their bank accounts by summer 2026. The number of bills sent through Siirto is expected to rise into the millions during 2026, since around 75% of companies that send e invoices in Finland are already onboard with Siirto.
