Joint venture of OP and Nordea begins operations – phone number–based payments become even more versatile

Article 04.03.2025

The new company offers domestic solutions for easy and secure account‑based payments. Using a phone number, consumers can make payments to friends and in online stores and, in the future, order both recurring and one‑off e‑invoices. The services expand the possibilities of account‑based payments in Finland and operate within Siirto partner applications, such as mobile banking apps or corresponding payment applications. New services will be introduced during 2026.

Through the transaction, OP and Nordea are expanding the operations of Siirto Brand Oy, which they previously owned in equal shares. Customers of banks using Siirto services do not need to download a separate application; instead, the services are securely available within the customer’s own banking app or a corresponding mobile application. Siirto currently has 1.5 million registered users.

“We offer Finns easy and secure payment services that are available in the Siirto partner application already used by the customer. In an uncertain global environment, a domestic frontrunner in payment development is also part of Finland’s national security of supply”

Jani Eloranta, Head of Retail Banking at Nordea.

From the launch onwards, OP, Nordea and OmaSp are involved in developing the payment services of the new joint venture. In addition, discussions are ongoing with several other market participants. Payment service providers Paytrail Oyj, Svea Payments Oy, Visma Pay Oy and Verifone Finland Oy (BlueCommerce) already use Siirto services as an online payment solution.

“The joint venture already has a broad customer base whose needs we will be able to serve even better in the future. Our goal is that these services will eventually be available to all Finns, and therefore we invite all market participants to join”

Masa Peura, Head of Everyday Banking Services at OP

Mikko Ketola will take up the position of Chief Executive Officer of the joint venture on 2 May 2025, transferring from his previous role as Head of eCommerce at OP Corporate Bank. The Chair of the Board is Jussi Pajala (Chief Executive Officer, Nordea Hypo), with Kasimir Hirn (Chief Technology and Development Officer, OP Group), Mika Tulonen (Director, Group Control, OP Group) and Anna Eklund (Development Director, Nordea Finance) serving as board members.

Secure, versatile services that make everyday life easier
The existing Siirto services will continue to operate as before. With only a phone number, users can make account‑to‑account transfers between individuals and pay for purchases in online stores. During checkout, the phone number is entered, and a payment request is sent for approval to the Siirto partner application or mobile app used by the customer.

In addition to the current services, new account‑based payment solutions will be developed in the future. Customers will gain access to new services during 2026. As a new feature, merchants will be able to send e‑invoices to customers using only a phone number, including for one‑off invoices.

“For example, if a chimney sweep visits a summer cottage every three years, instead of sending a paper invoice, they can in the future send an e‑invoice using only the customer’s phone number. Small changes can have a big impact for both businesses and consumers,” Eloranta explains.

Going forward, the company will invest broadly in the development of various new features. The industry is widely invited to participate in the development of the services of the renewed Siirto Brand Oy.

“The new company develops secure services for its partners that make payments even smoother and easier. I believe that by centralising development work in a joint company, we can deliver competitive payment methods to our customers that work seamlessly directly within partners’ own mobile applications,” says Peura.
